Icon Update

There's absolutely no way I'm going to make my 10x10 Variated deadline, more's the pity. However, I'm going to keep working on the project, since it's such great inspiration, and, of course, because Veronica Mars is full of sexy goodness. Here's the most recent, along with a couple of random, pretty things for good measure.

10x10 Variated: Veronica Mars

First Ten: Use only the original images, changing the color only and nothing else. Color each icon differently, using different color fill layers or adjustment layers. No textures, gradients, brushes, or stock images allowed.

Second Ten: Every icon must have readable text on it. As well, every icon must have a different font. Do not use fonts that are excessively popular at the time (i.e. Action Jackson, Violation, Cooper Black).

Third Ten: Use a texture on every icon. A different texture must be used on each one.

Fourth Ten: Every icon must include a stock image. NO CLOUDS!

Fifth Ten: Rotate the images. This can be done any way, upside down, to the right, the left, caddy cornered, whatever.

Sixth Ten: Images must be black and white.

Seventh Ten: On each icon, use one effect feature from the Effects menu in your program.

Eighth Ten: Every icon must be less than 100x100 pixels. (i.e. The sides must be uneven.)

Ninth Ten: Every icon must use one popular icon trend that is hot at the time. This changes frequently but it will be easy since you see these trends everywhere.

Tenth Ten: Free for all! Do whatever you want with these ten!

Tulip Header Tutorial

1. Crop your image, resize, sharpen, whathaveyou. I went with a 900x300 size for my header, and chose not to sharpen at all, because I wanted a very soft image.

2. Duplicate your base, set to Screen at 100%.

3. Create a new fill layer, color #ebebeb, set to Burn at 100%.

4. Create a new fill layer, color #013d70; duplicate it twice (for a total of three layers). Set the bottom two layers to Screen, set the top to Subtract, all at 100%. (Photoshop/PSP users, this step is essentially an exclusion layer)

5. Set this gradient by pagina_nova to Overlay at 100%.

6. Set this texture by bambinainnero to Overlayat 100%.

7. Set this texture (also by bambinainnero) to Overlay at 100%.

8. Set this texture by ohfreckle to Lighten Only at 100%.

9. Set this texture by [?] to Multiply at 90%.

10. Create a new fill layer, color #e09395, set to Multiply at 40%.

11. Rotate this texture by ______unwritten 90 degrees clockwise, and resize to a width of 900px. Set to Overlay at 100%.

12. Add any text you might like, and you're done! I'd love to see your results.

Yuuki tutorial

1. Grab your base, crop, sharpen, whatever. I started with a Vampire Knight base from theiya_sama.

2. Create a new fill layer, color d8edfb, and set to Burn at 100%.

3. Create a new fill layer, color eeb2b2, and set to Soft Light at 27%.

4. Create a new fill layer, color 890000, and set to Overlay at 100%.

5. Create TWO new fill layers, color 000048. Set the bottom layer to Screen at 100%, and the top to Subtract at 17% (Photoshop & PSP users, this is essentially an exclusion layer).

6. Set this texture by peoplemachines to Screen at 100%.

7. Set this texture by silverqe to Screen at 100%.

8. Set this texture by silverqe to Screen at 100%, and flip horizontally.

9. Set this brush by hawksmont to Screen at 90%.

Red Blood Sticks Like Glue tutorial

1. Grab your base, crop, sharpen, etc. I started with a Vampire Knight screencap from ohsnape, then cropped and sharpened.

2. Go to Hue/Saturation. Increase RED to 100%. Desaturate everything else (desaturize any red areas you don't want to emphasize using the lasso tool).

3. Duplicate your base, set to Soft Light at 100%.

4. Create a new layer. Fill with a red-to-black gradient, set to Overlay at 100%.

5. Using a scratchy brush, draw a thick red line (I used #5d050d) where you intend to place your text (if you want any). Set to Multiply at 100%.

6. Add your text. I used a text brush by purebloodicons.

7. Duplicate your gradient layer and drag to the top. Set on Overlay at 38%.

8. Set this brush by toybirds on Screen at 100%.

2. Create a new fill layer, color D8EDFB, set to Burn at 100%.

3. Create a new fill layer, color fbd8ef, set to Burn at 100%.

4. Create a new fill layer, color 000048. Duplicate this layer twice; set the bottom two layers to screen, and the top layer to subtract (Photoshop/PSP users, this is essentially an exclusion layer).

5. Create a new fill layer, color fbd8b2, set to Soft Light at 100%.

2. Duplicate your base. Ignoring the top layer for a moment, desaturate your base.

3. Increase the Hue/Saturation of the TOP LAYER. I brought mine up to 100%, but yours might be different.

4. Set the top layer to Multiply at 100%.

5. Set this texture by tiger_tyger to Soft Light at 70%.

6. Create a new fill layer, color 00407f, set to Screen at 45%.

7. Create a new fill layer, color f49e57, set to Multiply at 40%.

8. Set this texture by silverqe to Lighten at 60%.

Pink Angel Tutorial

1. Grab your base, crop, resize, sharpen, whatever. I started with a base by lizzers22.

2. Duplicate your base. Set the top layer to Overlay, 100.

3. On your BASE LAYER, adjust the Hue/Saturation. I brought mine up to 100%.

4. OPTIONAL STEP: At this point, I decided that the white parts of my icon were a little harsh. I wanted to change them without compromising the coloring of my icon, so I selected a very pale pink (from her wing), and colored them in.
See? Much better.

5. Set this peachy texture to Overlay at 68%. (Did you make this? Please let me know.)

6. Set this texture by spooky_window to Soft Light at 100%.

7. Set this texture by gothic_mischief to Screen at 100%. Rotate so that the emphasis is at the bottom of your icon.

8. Set this texture from the same set to Screen at 100%.

Yay, you made it! Show me what you got, alright?

Sakura Tutorial

1. Grab your base, crop, resize, sharpen, whatever. I started with a Sakura base from shiroitsubasa.

2. Set this brush by the Glinted Brush to Multiply at 40%.

3. Duplicate your base and desaturate. Erase the bottom half of this layer.

4. Flip your top layer vertically (so that it's upside-down).

5. Create a new fill layer. Pick a central color from your icon (I used 7b293c). Use a fuzzy-edged brush to draw a straight line between your two icon halves.

6. Add your text! I used Bookman Antiqua, font size 8. Move your text layer up over the line from step 5.

That's it~ you're done! I'd love to see your results!

AIR tutorial

1. Grab your base, crop, resize, sharpen, whatever. I started with an AIR base from shiroitsubasa.

2. Go to Hue/Saturation and increase the Saturation by 100% (this level will vary depending on your icon!).

3. Set this gradient by staticromance04 to Burn at 100% (DO NOT resize).

4. Create a new fill layer, color ff8eb8, set to Soft Light at 100%.

5. Create a new fill layer, color 00005f. GIMPers, duplicate this layer twice: set the bottom two layers to Screen, and the top layer to Subtract at 57%. Photoshop/PSP, this is basically an Exclusion layer.

6. Open a new 100x100 blank canvas. Fill with a central color from your icon; I chose 518dc3 (the blue from the background). Set this brush by wicked_enough to Screen.
(look, the little dots are blue!)

7. Merge all the layers of your icon. Resize to 94x94, and paste onto your border canvas.
